Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Wesley Fofana from Leicester City. Initially reported by RMC, the story has since been confirmed by The Athletic. Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday that Leicester had turned down £75 million (€88 million) offer from Chelsea. That fee would have been a record for a center-back (overview).

It now appears that both sides have reached an agreement. Although no fee has been reported at this point, the indication is that the fee will be in the region of what has been reported by Romano on Thursday. The 21-year-old center-back is, therefore, set to break a record set by Harry Maguire, who joined Man United from Leicester City for €87 million in the 2019/20 season. Fofana would also be the most expensive transfer of the summer window (overview).

Fofana’s imminent transfer also ends a transfer saga that started in early August. The defender was left out of Leicester’s squad that lost to Southampton last weekend. Manager Brendan Rodgers pointed out that the Frenchman, who was signed for €35 million from Saint-Etienne in 2020, was not in the right frame of mind. “I mentioned in the week about coming into a Premier League game and maybe one or two players not being in the right frame of mind, you can’t carry them, and certainly we can’t,” Rodgers said to NBC (cited by The Athletic). “So that’s the reason for the change.

Second-half goals from Antonio Rudiger and Jorginho earned Chelsea a crucial victory over Leicester City that took them above their visitors into third place.
Chelsea had the better of the first-half chances at Stamford Bridge, with Ben Chilwell firing across goal early on and Timo Werner having one goal disallowed for handball and another for offside.

Rudiger eventually broke the deadlock two minutes after the break, tucking the ball home after Chilwell’s corner was deflected into his path.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty after a Video Assistant Referee review for a Wesley Fofana foul on Werner, which had originally been awarded as a free-kick. Jorginho sent Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way from 12 yards.

Leicester substitute Kelechi Iheanacho benefited from Wilfred Ndidi’s pressing to reduce the arrears 14 minutes from time and Ayoze Perez had a presentable late chance to grab an equaliser, but he fired over.
Chelsea held on to claim a victory that takes their points tally to 67, one more than Leicester’s 66.
The Foxes slip to fourth with one match remaining, and will drop to fifth if Liverpool beat Burnley on Wednesday.

Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s embarrassment when they face Leicester City in the Premier League.

The Blues have picked up four points from a possible nine in the Premier League this season, with their last outing seeing Thomas Tuchel’s side produce one of their worst performances since the German boss took over. Kalidou Koulibaly received a red card as Chelsea suffered a 3-0 loss to Leeds United, leaving the Blues in 12th place with a negative goal difference.

The red card for Koulibaly means that he will be missing from the Blues’ clash with Leicester City this weekend, leaving Tuchel with limited defensive options. Marc Cucurella could move to centre-back where he played occasionally for Brighton last season, meaning Ben Chilwell could return to the starting XI at wing-back.
