NAME: Arsenal – Leicester City
DATE: 13 Aug 2022
TIME: 14:00 UTC
VENUE: Emirates Stadium, London, England
Arsenal host Leicester City in their first home fixture of the 2022/23 Premier League season with Mikel Arteta’s side aiming to pick up six points from a possible six.
The Gunners kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 away win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. This followed an encouraging preseason for the north London side with hopes of a strong 2022/23 season high at the Emirates Stadium.
Leicester City, however, are still searching for their first victory of the new season after drawing 2-2 at home to Brentford on the opening weekend. The Foxes let a 2-0 lead slip at the King Power Stadium.
Last season saw Arsenal claim 2-0 wins home and away against Leicester in the Premier League and the Gunners will be targeting another victory over the visitors to north London.
Gabriel Jesus will start up front for Arsenal after an impressive Premier League debut for his new team in the win over Crystal Palace. Oleksandr Zinchenko could keep his place at left-back despite Kieran Tierney returning to fitness.
Ben White was forced to play at right-back at Selhurst Park and so Arteta will be keen to get Takehiro Tomiyasu back into the team to give Arsenal a natural right-sided option in their defence.
Danny Ward is set to keep his place in goal after the departure of Kasper Schmeichel to Nice. However, Ryan Bertrand is still sidelined through injury with Ricardo Pereira also currently unavailable.
Speculation continues to swirl around the future of both Wesley Fofana and James Maddison as suitors circle, but both players are expected to start at the Emirates, assuming they are still at Leicester City by then.
Leicester City predicted XI (3-5-1-1): Ward (GK) – Amartey, Evans, Fofana – Castagne, Justin, Dewsbury-Hall, Ndidi, Tielemens – Maddison, Vardy
Arsenal vs. Leicester City betting odds
Arsenal start this Premier League fixture as favourites. The goalscoring record of both teams means goals should be witnessed at the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal and Leicester City scoring twice on opening weekend.
Jesus will be a threat in the final third for the Gunners while Maddison is central to the creativity of the Leicester City frontline. Of course, it’s not certain the England international will start for the Foxes given the transfer speculation around him at the moment.
Chris Sutton has given his Premier League predictions for this weekend’s fixtures and both him and former Gunners midfielder Paul Merson agree on how Arsenal vs Leicester will go.
The Foxes didn’t have the best start to their 2022/23 Premier League campaign as they surrendered a 2-0 lead over Brentford, conceding two second-half goals at home for a point against the London club.
Arsenal won their season opener 2-0 over Crystal Palace in the Premier League’s first game of this season. Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and a Marc Guehi own goal saw the Gunners win away from home and they’ll look to continue that form this weekend.
I don’t want to jump on that bandwagon because I think Arsenal’s bubble will eventually burst a little bit, but I like what Gabriel Jesus has brought to their attack and, at home, I think they should edge this one.
Sutton predicted a 2-1 win for Arsenal, whilst Merson was equally negative in his preview for this weekend. He highlighted Arsenal’s goalscoring abilities and the Foxes’ leaky defence last week.
“I’m worried for Leicester this season,” he said. “There’s too much going on at the club. Maddison and Fofana have their heads turned at the moment, and Kasper Schmeichel’s departure is a massive loss for the team.
“They blew a 2-0 lead against Brentford and might lose quite a few players in the transfer market this month. I don’t see how they can keep a clean sheet this weekend.”
Merson predicts a 3-0 victory for Arsenal.
